Staff Ombuds Service Pilot

This fall, Texas State will be launching a pilot program for a staff ombuds services. The pilot will begin at the start of the fall term and run through December. During the pilot, Dr. Vince Luizzi, who currently serves the university as the faculty ombudsperson, will expand his role to also serve staff. Although he needs no introduction, Dr. Luizzi will attend the October Staff Council meeting to introduce himself as the ombuds to Council members, and provide an overview to ombuds services.

  • The name “ombudsman” (om budz man) comes from Swedish and literally means “representative.” At the most fundamental level, an ombudsman is one who assists individuals and groups in the resolution of conflicts or concerns. In the context of Texas State University, an ombudsperson is a designated neutral individual who is appointed by the university to facilitate the informal resolution of staff concerns.

  • The staff ombuds at Texas State will be accessible to all staff starting this fall to listen to concerns, promote dialogue, and provide additional opportunities for staff to engage in an informal dispute resolution process.
    The Ombudsperson:
    • is independent in structure and function to highest degree possible.
    • considers communications with those seeking assistance confidential, unless disclosure is required by law and/or policy (i.e. title IX).
    • is an informal resource, does not participate in any formal adjudicative or administrative procedure related to concerns brought to their attention.
