Overview:

Presenter(s): Dr. Dann Brown, Sylvia Gonzales, and Margaret Garry

In 2011, Texas State University was designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI). As an HSI, Texas State has been awarded four grants that focus on student support and success in a range of capacities. While this funding has strengthened and enhanced many Texas State programs, as well as facilitated the development of new initiatives such as the STEM Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) Program, concerns that the university is not doing enough to support its Hispanic and Latinx students remain.

This presentation will provide an overview of the existing services tied to the university’s HSI designation, with a focus on how the scope of grants enhance the university’s ability to support students. The session will then move to a discussion of actions that faculty and staff colleagues can take to make Hispanic and Latinx students feel welcome on campus and develop a sense of belonging at Texas State.
