Overview:

Presenter(s): Kelsey Banton, and Hilary Jones

As conversations about sexual assault emerge around the country, faculty and staff may often be in the position of responding to a student’s disclosure of sexual trauma. Regardless of whether the trauma occurred recently or in the past, it is important that students receive compassionate and supportive responses to their disclosures from university personnel. Conveying understanding of the impact of sexual violence and being informed about resources can also be an important step in a student’s path to healing. This workshop will help faculty and staff increase awareness of issues related to sexual violence and gain confidence in their efforts to help student survivors. Workshop topics include:

  • Definitions and types of sexual violence
  • Prevalence of victimization
  • An overview of trauma and its impact on survivors
  • Responding compassionately to direct disclosures
  • Barriers to reporting
  • Brief overview of staff responsibilities and options
  • On- and off-campus resources
